Augusta, long a home to the Kennebec tribe, was first settled by English people in 1628, as they came here from the Plymouth Colony, in Massachusetts.

The oldest surviving wooden fort in New England, Fort Western (built in 1754), is in Augusta and today is a national historic landmark and a living-history museum.

When Maine became a state, in 1920, Augusta beat out Portland, Hallowell and Brunswick to be named its capital. With the power of the Kennebec River harnessed for industry, the town became home to fabric, lumber and paper mills.

While many of those old mills and factories are gone, Augusta remains a vibrant city. The downtown area around Water Street has seen a revival, and you’ll find locally owned businesses there, including old-school cobblers, restaurants and breweries.

For those looking to get closer to nature, there’s the Kennebec River Rail Trail and the trails at the Viles Arboretum, great for walking. Hungry? Go to the Red Barn for its famous foot-long lobster roll.
There’s a lot to love about living in Augusta: low unemployment, affordable housing costs, a good cost of living, high-quality education, excellent health care and a strong sense of community.
