Propane Safety Reminders for Summer 2019
Posted: June 3, 2019
Propane is a great fuel for summer fun, powering everything from pool heaters and fire pits to torches, patio heaters, and (of course) grills.
But as with any fuel in any season, care is needed when you’re using propane in the summer; since June is National Safety Month, now seems as good a time as any to remind you of some safety considerations to consider with the propane appliances inside and outside your Maine home.
Maintain adequate distance – Keep your propane grill, space heater or fire feature at least three feet from all building openings and ten feet from any air intake device; this minimizes the danger of propane vapor entering your home. Keep all propane-burning equipment away from any combustible materials such as fences, wood, and vinyl siding, as well as from any materials that emit combustible fumes (including paint and other finishing products).
Store cylinders correctly – If you use refillable propane cylinders, always store them upright and outdoors – never inside garages, storage sheds, etc.
Inspect and maintain your equipment – Professional maintenance for propane equipment will spot problems that could cause safety risks for your family – be sure to have your propane equipment inspected and serviced every year.
Review propane safety tips with your family – Summer is a great time for a short refresher course on propane safety: be sure your family knows what to do in the event of a propane emergency, especially if you smell propane gas.
