Getting More from Your Propane Appliances, Part 4 of 4: Your Propane Heating System
Posted: October 31, 2017
If you already heat your house with propane, you know how much better a job it does than an electric-powered heating system (if you haven’t switched from electric to propane heating, what are you waiting for?).
Here are some things you can do to help your system run better for less:
Get regular maintenance – We keep saying it because it’s true: an annual tune-up is one of the best investments you can make for your home heating system. It will help the system run better for longer and help you prevent most major repairs. Don’t skip it!
Weatherize and insulate – Most homes are under-insulated and leak, through spaces around exterior wall openings, the same amount of air as a house with a wide-open window would! Caulking or weather stripping around doors and windows and properly insulating attic, basement, and crawl spaces will not only cut your energy bills, it will reduce wear and tear on your heating (and cooling) system, too.
For furnaces:
Check your filter once a month – Replace your HVAC system’s filter at the beginning of each heating season; check it once a month when the system is in regular use and replace it when it’s dirty.
Use your programmable thermostat – You can cut your annual heating bills by 10 percent or more by turning down the heat when you’re not home or asleep.
For boiler-based systems:
Insulate your boiler – Use an insulating blanket on your boiler to help it retain heat.
Consider an upgrade – Today’s high efficiency propane boilers can cut your bills by 25 percent or more compared to an older model, particularly if the older boiler hasn’t been maintained properly.
