Taking good care of your air conditioning system is super important for your Maine home. And we all know that just because we’re saying goodbye to summer doesn’t mean we should forget about our air conditioners. In fact, we should give them a high level of priority so they’re ready to start off strong next summer.

Home Cooling Summer Wrap Up

Here are four tips to keep in mind so your air conditioning system is in tip-top shape for the season next time you need it.

  1. Reduce your current air conditioner usage. Sure, you might still be running your A/C as the summer winds down. But you should be running it like it’s the end of summer—not like it’s the middle of July in Androscoggin County. It’s important not to overwork your air conditioner’s system as this wastes energy and increases the likelihood of necessary repairs in the near future.

A few ways to reduce your usage while keeping cool and comfortable include the following:

    • Increase the temperature on your thermostat.
    • Use ceiling fans.
    • Open the windows—especially if you really need to up your air circulation.
  2. Clean up the area around your air conditioning unit. Anything that can block the air flow of your A/C unit is a potential problem. Check for twigs, weeds, grass clippings or any other debris that may be in and around the area. If you see anything like this, clear it and then check the area again.
  3. Make sure the condenser coils are clean. An A/C with dirty condenser coils is an A/C that’s working too hard. The moisture and mildew that builds up can create a real hindrance to your system. When you clean off the condenser coils, also give the condensate drain a check for any clogs.
  4. Change your air filter. For an average-sized home in the suburbs, you should change your air conditioning filter at least once every three months. (And if you have pets or someone with allergies, then a more frequent change is in order!) With a fresh filter, the A/C will operate more efficiently, which will lower your bills and extend the system’s life.
